PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optionally control the injection timing of air-fuel mixture by providing an openable and closable main valve on the communicating passage between an air assist chamber communicating with the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine and the combustion chamber, and providing a fuel injection nozzle and an air injection nozzle within the air assist chamber. SOLUTION: An air assist chamber 2 is formed within a fuel injection device 1, and this chamber 2 is allowed to communicate with a combustion chamber through an injection port 2a. A main valve 3 for opening and closing the injection port 2a by a poppet type valve part 3b is provided on the injection port 2a, and a fuel injection nozzle 5 and an air injection nozzle 6 are arranged within-the air assist chamber 2 so that they are directed to the valve part 3b of the main valve 3 and the respective injecting direction are crossed to each other. The main valve 3, the fuel injection nozzle 5 and the air injection nozzle 6 are arranged so that the respective central axes are present on substantially the same plane, and these are controlled by an ECU 4, whereby the injection timing and air-fuel mixture concentration are optionally controlled.
