PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide synthetic calcium silicate free from fluorine and suitable as a base material for mold powder for continuous casting of steel and to provide the mold powder for continuous casting of steel, which has appropriate viscosity and crystallization temp. and which is obtained by using the synthetic calcium silicate, and which makes it possible to extremely improve the quality of mold chip, obtain the mold chip without mending and realize stable casting without the formation of break-out. SOLUTION: The synthetic calcium silicate is comprised of a melt water- granulated material which contains, as indispensable components, CaO and SiO in the weight ratio of CaO to SiO2 of 0.30-1.05 and, as inevitable impurity, Fe2O3 in an amount of <=3.0 wt.% and is substantially free from fluorine. The mold powder for continuous casting of steel contains the synthetic calcium silicate.
