PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a sulfonated product of an aromatic polymer by which the sulfonated product having a low and uniform sulfonation degree and useful as an additive for a resin can be obtained in high efficiency. SOLUTION: This method for producing a sulfonated product of an aromatic polymer in which the sulfonation degree is <=60% comprises a step of dissolving the aromatic polymer and one or more kinds of Lewis bases in the amount of 0.2-2.0 molar times as much as a sulfonating agent in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent and (2) a step of adding the sulfonating agent in an amount of 0.05-1.0 molar time as much as the unit of the aromatic monomer of the aromatic polymer to the obtained solution.
