The method involves alternately connecting sensors (22,23) associated with gripper elements to different electrical potentials and measuring the potential drops occurring at the sensors. Each sensor is alternately connected to a potential different from the common potential applied to the other sensors. An Independent claim is also included for a transfer device for electrically conducting workpieces.
