The inductance of a coil (8) is changed due to the stroke movement of a body (1). The coil is part of a resonant circuit, whose resonance characteristics provide the position signal. In addition to the inductance, capacitive changes in resonant circuit also take place in response to the stroke movement. The changes in inductance and the changes in capacitance caused by the stroke movement are set in proportion to each other so that the LC product or L/C quotient remains constant.
