A vehicle headlamp switched between high and low beam has a device moving a shade relative to a reflective surface of a reflector unit. This changes the amount of light from a bulb that is incident on the surface. A member regulates the movement of the shade and contacts the shade in one of its two positions. The device may be a solenoid whose iron core is moved against a return spring to move the shade from the low beam to the high beam position.
