PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To oxidize a substrate high in reaction rate, selectivity and conversion rate by oxidizing the substrate containing methyl, methylene or methine group in the presence of a catalyst system consisting of a specific imide compound and a metal cocatalyst, and an aldehyde in an organic solvent. SOLUTION: This method for oxidizing a substrate comprises oxidizing simultaneously the substrate containing methyl, methylene or methine group (e.g.; indane) with a 2-20C aromatic or aliphatic aldehyde (e.g.; acetaldehyde) in the presence of a catalyst system consisting of (A) an imide compound of formula I or II (R1, R2 are each H, OH, a halogen, a 1-20C alkyl, alkenyl or alkoxy, an aryl or the like, and R1 and R2 together form double bond in formula I or form a ring in formula I or II; X is O or OH; (n) is 1-3), (e.g.; N- hydroxysuccinimide) and (B) a cocatalyst containing one or more kinds of elements selected from the group consisting of transition metals and elements belonging to the 2A and 3A groups in the Periodic Table, in an organic solvent to obtain a corresponding oxo compound.
