PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain activated charcoal capable of exhibiting excellent adsorbing properties to many compounds and excellent performances of functions such as moisture release and absorption properties, or the like, essentially possessed by charcoal. SOLUTION: This method for producing activated charcoal comprises a low-temperature carbonization process for heat-treating wood chips at 450-550 deg.C to carbonize the wood chips, a high-temperature carbonization process following the low-temperature carbonization process, heat treatment of the carbonized wood chips at 800-900 deg.C for 480-650 seconds and further carbonizing the carbonized material, and an activation process for bringing water into contact with the carbonized material at the end point of the high-temperature carbonization process. Consequently, the obtained activated charcoal has improved functions such as adsorbing properties and can synergistically exhibit excellent characteristics possessed by both the low-temperature carbonized part and the high-temperature carbonized part.
