PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize the traveling for completing a system readiness test(SRT) and more efficiently perform a failure diagnosis by discriminating the trouble data stored in the memory device of a vehicle, handling a plurality of memory data discriminatable as the same system as one item, and selectively erasing the memory content of the vehicle. SOLUTION: A vehicle diagnostic device 1 has a communicating means, and it is connected to a connecting connector 3 through a communicating cable 2. On a vehicle side, each control unit 5 is connected to a communication line 4. The diagnostic device 1 requests transmission of vehicle operating state, transmission and rewrite of stored failure data, and control of various actuators to the control unit 5. This device 1 has a means for discriminating the memory content of a self-diagnostic memory device gained by this communicating means every concerning system, a display means for displaying various data and the discrimination result, and a rewriting means for rewriting the memory content of the self-diagnostic memory device of the vehicle by the communicating means.
