PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve irregular illuminance in an illumination area even when the curvature of field is found in an illumination optical system by deviating the position of the paraxial part of a curved image from the position of a surface to be illuminated. SOLUTION: A relay lens system 10 consisting of at least three lens groups having positive refractive power respectively is provided in the optical path of blue light whose length is longer than those of two other optical paths of red light and green light out of the respective optical paths of three beams emitted from a condenser lens 8 and separated to the light of three colors, red, green and blue by dichroic mirrors DM1 and DM2. The paraxial image surface of the light incident surface of a 1st lens array 3 consisting of the relay lens system 10 or the conjugate surface of a surface near the light incident surface or the light emitting surface of a rod integrator or the conjugate surface of a surface near the light emitting surface is not aligned with the light incident surface of a liquid crystal display device BLCD dedicated to blue. Thus, the blur of an image surface only at the periphery on an image plane is prevented and illuminance drop at the periphery with respect to the center is prevented.
