PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-performance polyester fiber having a high strength and a high modulus of elasticity by which spinning and drawing can stably be carried out without installing a special spinning apparatus or providing a special step and the polyester fiber can be produced with good productivity. SOLUTION: The concentration of a compound compatible with an ethylene terephthalate-based polyester having 0.9-3.0 intrinsic viscosity IV is kept at a higher one in the direction to the central part in the cross-sectional shape of the fiber and the resultant mixture is then spun and continuously drawn or wound once and subsequently drawn when adding the compound compatible with the ethylene terephthalate-based polyester thereto at >=210 deg.C temperature, melt spinning the prepared mixture, drawing the formed fiber and producing a polyester fiber having a high strength and a high modulus of elasticity.
