PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium in which a superior electromagnetic conversion characteristic and a superior durability are compatible, which is of high reliability and whose recording density is high. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is provided with a lower layer which is formed on one face of a support, an uppermost-layer magnetic layer which is formed on the lower layer, and which is composed mainly of a ferromagnetic metal powder and a binder and whose thickness is 0.2μm or lower, and a back coat layer which is formed on the other face of the support. In the uppermost-layer magnetic layer, the ratio (Hc/Br) of its coercive force (Hc) to its remnant magnetic flux density (Br) is at 560 to 1,240 kA/(m.T), and the coercive force (Hc) is at 160 to 240 kA/m. The magnetic recording medium is used for a recording and reproducing system in which a recorded signal is reproduced by a magnetoresistance magnetic head.
