PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device having sharp voltage- transmittance characteristic and suitable for multiplex driving even through the device is a TN type device, and to provide a method for the production of this device. SOLUTION: This device is a twisted nematic liquid crystal display device having a first substrate 5, a second substrate 6 and a liquid crystal material 11 sealed between the first substrate 5 and the second substrate 6. The first substrate 5 has a plurality of stripe scanning electrodes, on which scanning signal voltage is to be applied, and an alignment film 9. The second substrate 6 has a plurality of stripe signal electrodes 8, which are arranged to cross with the scanning electrodes 7 and on which video signal voltage is to be applied, and an alignment film 10 formed on the signal electrodes. The liquid crystal material is in a twisted state from one of the first and second substrates to the other. The surface anchoring strength of the liquid crystal material 11 on the alignment films 9, 10 is set at 1.0×10-4 J/m2 or smaller.
