The controller has a control device (2) and a number of normal switching elements (3a-3c), each with an associated defined load (V1-V3) controllable by the control device. The switching elements are connected to the control device via control lines (2a-2c) and to the loads via output lines (4a-4c), outputs (5a-5c) and connecting lines (4a'-4c'). The controller has at least one other additional switching element (10a-10c) connected to the control device via a control line (12a-12c). One output of the additional switching element is connected to a free output (15a-15c) of the control device via a further output line; if one of the normal switching elements fails the control signal driving it is diverted to an additional switching element.
