PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuously variable transmission which can shift to arbitrary change gear ratio desired by a driver at the time of manual shift mode of the continuously variable transmission, also prevent an engine over run at the time of manual shift mode. SOLUTION: This continuously variable transmission, provided with a manual shift mode, is constituted so that change gear ratio relating to respective shift step of manual shift can be arbitrarily set by using a multi-display 90, a shift reflecting intention of a driver can be made, and a feeling of driving is improved. When an engine over run is likely generated by a shift in the case of a manual shift mode, change gear ratio of the shift step is tentatively changed, the engine over run is previously prevented, also when an operating condition comes out from a generating region of the engine over run, gear ratio of the shift step tentatively set is returned to preset gear ratio. Accordingly, giving a feeling of physical disorder to the driver can be suitably prevented.
