PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state imaging pickup element, capable of vertically transferring signal charges at a high speed and high accuracy. SOLUTION: A plurality of matrix-arranged sensors, photoelectrically convert an incident light into signal charges which are then frame-read or field-read out and vertically transferred to vertical transfer parts 5a, 5b, etc., provided vertically between the sensors, the transfer parts 5a, 5b, etc., are connected to sensor 1a1, etc., at transfer gates 2, and two-phase driven vertical transfer elements 3a1, etc., are connected in series with potential barrier regions 6a provided at gaps between drive electrodes of the adjacent transfer elements 3a1, etc. Two phase drive signals are applied to vertically transfer signal charges in transfer channels, a simple control operation with a two phase drive enables a high-precision vertical transfer, without leaving signal charges untransferred, at a speed 4 times as high as in prior art, and in the field read operation, read and mixing of signal charges are made at the same time to enable simplify the operation.
