PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily charge and discharge a treated matter in a carbonization oven within a short time and to reduce the amount of heat released to the outside of the oven. SOLUTION: A discharge orifice 12 projects in a tangential direction from a body part 7 of a carbonization oven 2 comprising a rotary drum. The carbonization oven 2 is rotated in the direction in which the discharge orifice 12 projects to carbonize a treated matter 4 such as paper, sawdust, etc., contained in the carbonization oven 2. The carbonization oven 2 is then rotated in the direction opposite to the direction in which the discharge orifice 12 projects to discharge the treated matter 4 from the discharge orifice 12.
