PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fixing device in which the thickness of a polyimide resin belt is optimized for the belt substrate of a fixing belt. SOLUTION: The fixing device 10 has a pressing roller 30 brought into rotational contact with a fixing roller 28 under a prescribed pressure, a heat generating means 32 of a heating roller 34 kept apart from the fixing roller 28 and a fixing belt 36 endlessly stretched between the heating roller 34 and the fixing roller 28 and heating an unfixed toner on a sheet S which passes through the rotational contact part between the fixing roller 28 and the pressing roller 30 when it receives heat transfer from the heat generating means 32. The unfixed toner carried on the surface of the sheet S is fixed when the sheet S passes through the rotational contact part along one direction. The fixing belt 36 has a heat resistant elastic releasing layer 36b formed on the outer surface of an endless belt substrate 36a formed of polyimide resin. The thickness of the belt substrate 36a is >=75μm from the viewpoint of the breaking strength of the fixing belt and <=400μm from the viewpoint of heat transferability.
