PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily generate an index picture for a still picture and to easily manage the still pictures. SOLUTION: In the case of capturing a still picture and recording it onto a recording medium 10, an encode section 200 applies compression processing to the still picture. A main MPU section 100 incorporates a still picture grouping processing function that groups captured still pictures and a menu picture generating function that reduces pictures grouped by the group processing function to form one index picture and also is provided with a function that includes the index picture into a part of a data unit including the still pictures of a corresponding group to record the resulting data unit in the recording medium 10 through a data processing section 600 and a disk drive section 700.
