PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of simplifying user setting operation at the time of preliminary scanning and main-scanning various originals in a proper reading mode. SOLUTION: When the preliminary scanning is started (S2), a reflected light from a read original is converted into an RGB digital signal and it is given to a CPU 111. The CPU 111 calculates differences Drg, Dgb, Dbr of RGB data for every pixel or for every prescribed pixel interval to discriminate whether or not the differences Drg, Dgb, Dbr are greater than a prescribed value (S3). When the differences Drg, Dgb, Dbr are greater than the prescribed value, the read original is discriminated to be a color original (S4) and the main scanning is started in a color original mode (S5). On the other hand, in the case that at least any of the differences Drg, Dgb, Dbr is less than the a prescribed value, the read original is discriminated to be a monochromatic original (S6) and the main scanning is started in a monochromatic original mode (S7).
