The method involves setting up an integral equation relating to the surface density of magnetic moments (layer of magnetic dipoles). The right-hand term of the equation is the second differential (d<2>B2/dz<2>) of the magnetic field-induction in the normal direction to the measuring plane, measured by a gradiometer. Analytical expressions are determined for the factors of a matrix (A), which approximates to the integral operator of the integral equation.. The measured values of the function y=d<2>Bz/dz<2> are interpolated at the nodes of grid of small dimensions. A linear algebraic equation system Ax=y is solved according to Tickhonov, where x is the surface density of the magnetic moments. A contour map of the surface density of the magnetic moments or an equivalent flux map is constructed. The map is read into a storage or output unit. An Independent claim is included for further methods, and the use of the method for automatic analysis of patient data.
