PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silver halide emulsion free from the increase of fog and having higher sensitivity. SOLUTION: The silver halide photographic element includes at least one radiation sensitive silver halide emulsion layer containing epitaxially sensitized silver halide grains and a fragmentable electron donative compound of the formula X-Y' or a compound having the part of the formula -X-Y' (where X is an electron donor part; Y' is a releasable proton H or a releasable group Y; and when Y' is a proton, the baseβ- is directly or indirectly covalent-bonded to X). (1) The X-Y' has 0 to about 1.4 V oxidation potential, (2) the oxidized form of the X-Y' is subjected to a bond cleavage reaction to form a radical X. and a released fragment Y' and, optionally, (3) the radical X. has <=-0.7 V.
