PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data repeater that can transmit data, immediately after a port-up for a device, in which the loop of a transmission path is not formed. SOLUTION: When any port 36 undergoes a port-up state, the contents of an STP use propriety flag of the port 36 are checked (S22). When the port 36 is an application object of a spanning-tree protocol ('YES' in S22), the spanning-tree buildup processing is conducted according to a conventional method (S24-S34). When the port 36 is not an application object of the spanning- tree protocol (NO in S22), after conducting 'Listening and Learning' for a very short time (S36-S38), the port is shifted to a 'Forwarding' state (S32).
