PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel consumption and reduce the emission amount of unburnt HC and NOx by enlarging the operation range of compressed self- ignition combustion. SOLUTION: An operating condition determination part 2 in an ECU 1 determines operating conditions from a crank angle sensor signal and an accelerator travel sensor signal, and sets the number of fuel injections at one or two. A first fuel injection control part 3 controls the first fuel injection to form a first mixed gas region 6 that never ignites about the compression top dead center, and a second fuel injection control part 4 controls the second fuel injection to produce a second mixed gas region 7 that ignites about the compression top dead center. A fuel injection valve drive part 5 outputs a drive signal for a fuel injection valve 18 depending on signals from the first and second fuel injection control parts 3 and 4.
