PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a card from being illegally taken-out even in a state where a shutter is nor closed. SOLUTION: The card insertion slot 21 is provided with a freely opening/ closing possible shutter 3 or permitting a card 2 to be taken-in to the card reader 1 and a card width detecting means 4 for detecting the insertion of the card 2, shutter 3 is moved to an open position when the means 4 detects the insertion of the card 2 and the card 2 is taken into the inside of the card reader 1 to perform a prescribed processing in the card reader 1. The means 4 is provided with a card width detecting member 5 to be moved by abutment on the card 2, an engagement member 6 being movable to the movement area of the member 5 and also a movement mechanism 7 for moving the member 6 are arranged, the mechanism 7 is moved to permit the member 6 to face the movement area of the member 5 in the case of detecting the abnormal stop of the card 2 when he shutter 3 is at the open position and, then, the taking-out of the card 2 is prevented by the member 5.
