PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer recording method and a thermal transfer printer whereby so-called 'gap filling' recording by separate driving with the use of the same color ink for one recording line can be well carried out by adjusting a press contact pressure of a thermal head. SOLUTION: According to this thermal transfer recording method, for recording one recording line, the recording is carried out with the use of a specific color ink ribbon by a plurality of the number of times separately, whereby color recording images of many gradations are obtained. At the separate driving by the plurality of the number of times with the use of the same color ink ribbon for the one recording line, the press contact pressure of the thermal head at the recording time by the second separate driving and afterwards is made larger than the press contact pressure at the recording time by the first separate driving.
