PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical element wherein reduction of manufacturing cost and improvement of yield are enabled, and a manufacturing method of the device. SOLUTION: In the semiconductor optical element wherein an active layer 6, a light confinement layer 8 of a second conductivity type and an electrode 11 are formed in this order on a substrate 1 of a first conductivity type, the light confinement layer is constituted of a stripe-shaped current injection window layer 8b and current block layers 8a which are formed on both sides of the current injection window layer and have electric resistance higher than that of the current injection window layer. A current from the electrode is constricted by the current block layers and injected into the active layer from the current injection window layer.
