SOLUTION: This reader is provided with a reference plate, a plurality of photodetectors for outputting a signal corresponding to received light quantity, a dust position detecting part for detecting an abnormal photodetector outputting an abnormal signal among the plurality of photodetectors on the basis of signals outputted by the plurality of photodetectors when the plurality of photodetectors receive light reflected by the reference plate, an outputting part fox outputting signals outputted by the plurality of photodetectors in turn, a transfer pulse generation circuit for generating transfer pulsesϕ1 andϕ2 for sequentially transferring the signals outputted by the plurality of photodetectors to the outputting part, and a reset pulse generation circuit for generating a reset pulse RS for resetting the outputting part. The reset pulse generation circuit generates the reset pulse RS before signals outputted by the plurality of photodetectors except the abnormal photodetector are transferred to the outputting part and does not generate the pulse RS before a signal outputted by the abnormal photodetector is transferred to the outputting part.
