The proximity sensor functions by causing a low voltage current flow to charge a condenser (Cc), this latter being connected to an electrode forming an antenna (3) which is integrated in the handle, this sensor detecting a variation in current resulting from the overflow current from the electrode caused by a very light capacitive coupling between the electrode and an exterior condenser (Ce) formed by the electrode/driver couple (C1), the driver/ground couple (C2), and the ground/vehicle couple (C3). The vehicle has a unit for detecting the presence of the driver (U) and includes a sensor (4) to detect the approach of the driver, and to send a detection signal of the presence of the driver to a central control unit for controlling the locking or unlocking of the vehicle door locks, when the driver draws near the external door handle (P).
