PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bed material which is useful for raising plants and whose main purposes are the approximate non-necessity of labors for watering controls in a period from a sowing treatment to seedling-raising treatments and also an efficient work for transplanting the seedlings, and to provide a sowing bed. SOLUTION: This bed material characterized in that a powdery or granular organic polymer having a property for absorbing water to form a gel and a culture base material comprising the fine pieces to granules of a vegetable or inorganic material, such as saw dust, paper dust, or artificial culture soil are main components. The sowing bed characterized by sealing the above- described bed material and seeds in a bag-like or vessel-like container comprising a seat material having biodegradability, water solubility, or water-absorbing collapsability.
