PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly-active catalyst for polymerizing an olefin capable of producing an olefin polymer such as a polypropylene (especially crystalline polypropylene) excellent in molding processability, suitably usable for blow- molding, sheet-forming, injection molding or the like, and having high stereoregularity and high melt tension. SOLUTION: This catalyst for polymerizing theα-olefin is obtained by bringing a solid component (component A) for stereoregular polymerization of theα-olefin, consisting essentially of titanium, magnesium and a halogen into contact with an organoaluminum compound (component B) and a silicon compound (component C) represented by general formula (1) (wherein, R1 and R2 are each an aliphatic hydrocarbon group; and R3 is a 1-6C linear hydrocarbon group). The method for polymerizing theα-olefin comprises polymerizing the olefin (propylene or the like) by using the catalyst.
