PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenylacetylene compound expected to have a large refractive index anisotropy, capable of being easily mixed with other liquid crystal compounds, having more advantage in stability to light, and usable for a material such as various films, and further to provide a liquid crystal composition, a liquid crystal or an optical element, containing the compound. SOLUTION: This phenylacetylene compound is represented by general formula (1) (A1 to A12 are each H, F or the like; B1 and B2 are each H or CH3; p, q, r, s and t are each 0 or 1 with the proviso that when p=0 and q=0, at least one of A2, A4 to A10 is a 1-10C alkyl group or alkoxy group which can be substituted with F; m and n are each an integer of 0-14, with the proviso that when s is 1, n is not O, and when t is 1, m is not 0; and W is -CH2CH2- or -C≡C-). The liquid crystal composition, the liquid crystal or the optical element contains the phenylacetylene compound.
