PURPOSE: An apparatus for detecting exhaustion of paper in a printer is provided to maximize operation efficiency of a printer by improving compatibility to use according to various unit roll standards of printing paper and to improve accuracy and convenience in use without controlling a setting position. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for detecting exhaustion of paper in the printer includes a frame(110) containing a roll of printing paper and providing the roll of printing paper in a prescribed step unit, a paper detecting part(210) for detecting an exhausted state of paper in a non-contact way based on a change of roll diameter of the printing paper, and a position controlling part(300) for controlling an initial setting position of the paper detecting part according to an initial roll diameter of the printing paper.
