PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk for high density recording which does not cause the loss of data due to the breaking of a magnetic layer in running along a head. SOLUTION: The magnetic disk is obtained by forming a substantially nonmagnetic underlayer on a substrate and a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder on the underlayer. The thickness of the magnetic layer is 0.02-0.5μm and the number of projections each having >=20 nm height and the number of projections each having >=70 nm height on the surface of the magnetic layer measured by AFM(atomic force microscope) are >=1×104 /mm2 and <=1×103 /mm2, respectively.
