PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for calculating thermal displacement correction quantity of a machine tool capable of calculating correction quantity precisely for thermal displacement of a machine tool even when a main spindle is restarted after stopping the main spindle. SOLUTION: This apparatus is provided with temperature measuring means 2 and 3 for measuring the temperature near the main spindle 15, a thermal displacement quantity estimating means 5 which estimate the thermal displacement quantity of the main spindle 15 from the temperature measured and a preset thermal displacement calculating expression, a correction quantity calculating means 7 for calculating correction quantity, and an adjusting displacement quantity calculating means 6 for estimating the lag displacement quantity when the main spindle 15 is restarted due to the stop of the main spindle 15 and calculating adjusting displacement quantity from the estimated lag displacement quantity. When the main spindle 15 is started, the correction quantity calculating means 7 calculates correction quantity only from the thermal displacement quantity estimated by the thermal displacement quantity estimating means 5, and when the main spindle 15 is restarted, correction quantity is calculated from the displacement quantity obtained by adding the adjusting displacement quantity, which is estimated by the thermal displacement quantity estimating means 5, or subtracting it from the thermal displacement quantity.
