PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting power source that can prevent breakage by the lighting current immediately after the lighting of the discharge lamp. SOLUTION: The lighting power source comprises a chopper circuit 6 that converts the input voltage into the voltage and current that are required for lighting the discharge lamp, a chopper circuit part control circuit 1 that controls the chopper circuits 6, an alternating current conversion circuit 3 that converts the chopper circuit output into an alternating current, and a high voltage generating circuit 4 that generates a high voltage based on the alternating current conversion circuit output and impresses it on the discharge lamp 5, and connects a switch element 7 in serial with the smoothing capacitor C1 in the chopper circuit 6.
