PURPOSE: An apparatus and method is provided to reduce cost and time for maintenance of engine by conveniently measuring compression pressure at any time as the need arises. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a starter motor(32) for compressing air by driving an air compressor when an engine(33) is cranked; an injector(35) for forming a compression pressure in a cylinder through non-injection of fuel during cranking by the starter motor; a cam sensor unit for judging rotation cycle of each cylinder and rotational frequency of engine when the engine is cranked; an electronic control unit(50) for measuring compression pressure of the cylinder and storing the compression pressure data obtained from the measurement in accordance with the signal output from the cam sensor unit; and a high scanner(46) for designating a cylinder to be test, through the data communication with the electronic control unit, and displaying the compression pressure measured by the electronic control unit.
