PURPOSE: An optimum design method of an optical mode adapter using a single step loss is provided, which obtains an optimum function of the mode adapter using a relation between a single step loss and an optical focusing degree. CONSTITUTION: According to the design method of an optical mode adapter, a step of each propagation axis direction is set as lambda/4 while applying a conventional approximate design method, and a discontinuous propagation distance is mx lambda/(4Neff), where m is an even integer and lambda is a wavelength and Neff is an effective refractive index of each waveguide. So, the propagation distance differs at every instance. A regulated frequency is used so that a loss generated while a mode distribution in an incident part waveguide is transmitted to an extension part has the same value as a loss generated while the mode distribution is transited to an exit part from the extension part, by dividing a function of the mode adapter into discontinuous parts.
