PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for the construction work of an index in an index construction type search engine. SOLUTION: An index generation control means 11 starts a type conversion program 12 at a timing determined beforehand (for example, the dead of night when the load of a data processing device 1 becomes light or the like). Hereby, the type conversion program 12 converts successively the form of a plurality of documents which are processing objects registered in a retrieval object document housing region 21 into a form treatable by an index organization program 13, and registers the result into a converted document housing region 22. Thereafter, the index generation control means 11 starts the index construction program 13. Hereby, the index construction program 13 generates the index 24 based on the converted document registered in the converted document housing region 22.
