PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rust preventive for metal, which enables the coexistence of satisfactory corrosion resistance and coating adhesion without incorporating chromium, and a rust prevention treated steel. SOLUTION: The rust preventive contains water, a water based resin as a solid content and a composite colloid containing Mg hydroxide and particulate silica of 0.1 to 50 pts.mass and particulate silica of 1 to 100 pts.mass to 100 pts.mass of the water based resin. The rust prevention treated steel is obtained by forming a film of 0.1 to 100 g/m<2> as a coating weight on the surface of steel subjected to zinc plating, zinc alloy plating or aluminum alloy plating from the rust preventive.
