PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state electronic image pickup device that obtains a video signal from which smear electric charges are eliminated. SOLUTION: A discharge drain 17 is provided in parallel with a horizontal transfer line 14 via a drain gate 16. Signal charges stored in photo diodes 11 on a (4m+3)th row and (4m+4)th row are shifted to a vertical transfer line 12 at 1/2 interleave in the vertical direction and the signal charges are outputted from the horizontal transfer line 14 as a video signal. Signal charges stored in photo diodes 11 on a (4m+1)th row and (4m+2)th row are not shifted to the vertical transfer line 12. In the case that signal charges (smear charges) stored in photo diodes 11 on a (4m+1)th row and (4m+2)th row leak to the vertical transfer line 12, the smear charges are discharged from the discharge drain 17 via the drain gate 16. Then the video signal from which the smear charges are eliminated can be obtained.
