PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance display quality of a planar display element whose gap is held by spacer columns by preventing the display unevenness due to the ununiformity of the gap caused by the fluctuation of the spacer columns after the planar display element is completed or the display defect due to vacuum bubbles produced by the change of the surrounding circumstance. SOLUTION: The spacer columns 13 are disposed in an arrangement density of a ratio of 5 columns to 8 pixels in the entire display area and the spacer columns 13 are disposed in the higher density of a ratio of 8 columns to 8 pixels in a display area peripheral part 11a in the vicinity of a sealing agent 15 on the counter electrode 18 of a color filter substrate 11. Thereby, the heights of the spacer columns 13 subjected to plastic deformation after an atmosphere is restored to a normal condition from a vacuum condition are made uniform over the entire display area including the display area peripheral part 11a, although particularly high pressure is applied to the spacer columns 13 in the display area peripheral part 11a in the vicinity of the sealing agent 15 when a liquid crystal is filled or the like.
