SIGN LANGUAGE TRANSLATION APPARATUS AND METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sign language translation apparatus and method capable of translating sign language with high precision through a simple process. SOLUTION: The sign-language translation apparatus includes a camera 2 for photographing a hand marked for sign language; a color extracting part 3 for recognizing and extracting a marking image from the images taken; a linearizing part 4 for simplifying the extracted marking image into line data; a data conversion part 5 for converting the line data of the marking image into numerical data; a sign-language data dictionary 6 for storing the numerical data specifying the sign language; a data comparing part 7 for comparing the converted numerical data to the numerical data in the sign-language data dictionary 6 to specify the sign language for translation into output data; an output part 8 for converting the translated sign-language output data into voice data and letter data for output; a speaker 9 for outputting the outputted voice data as voice; and a display part 10 for outputting the outputted letter data for display.
