PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermoelectric converting material, which has a superior thermoelectric characteristic and hardly deteriorates in the thermoelectric characteristic in a composition change in burning, reaction on water in the atmosphere, etc. SOLUTION: The thermoelectric converting material is made of a layered oxide in structure in which 1st sublattices made of pseudo-halite layers and 2nd sublatticles made of MO<SB>2</SB>layers formed of MO<SB>6</SB>octahedra (where M is a metal element) having ridges are laminated by turns; and the radio (b1/b2) of the mean cycles of the 1st sublattices along an axis (b) to the mean cycles b2 of the 2nd sublattices along the axis (b) is 1.4 to less than 1.61 to 1st sublatticles of the three-layered structure, 1.4 to less than 1.81 to 1st sublatticles of a four-layered structure, and 1.4 to less than (1.01+0.2 m) to 1st sublatticles of an (m)-layered structure (m: an integer larger than 5).
