PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lid fitting device for a cup type automatic vending machine, capable of firmly holding a lid while fitting the lid on a cup with drink, and of swiftly and surely releasing the lid holding after fitting the lid. SOLUTION: The lid fitting device comprises a lid transfer arm 82 freely moving and freely ascending/descending between a lid receiving position and a lid fitting position, a rotary press member 144 on which the lid L abuts when fitting the lid L on the cup C, a vertical transfer device 112 fitting the lid L on the cup C while having the lid L abut on the rotary press member 144 by lifting the cup C toward the lid L in the lid fitting position and lowering the cup C with the lid L fitted on it after fitting the lid L, and an arm drive mechanism 83 releasing the locking of the lid L with a lid locking claw 97 by driving the lid transfer arm 82 to a lid releasing position before the cup C with the lid L fitted on it is lowered by the vertical transfer device 112 after fitting the lid L.
