PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such a transmission and reception system for a digital method by which a user can efficiently perform channel search during viewing a program only by adopting a simple configuration. SOLUTION: In a transmission system for digital broadcasting for digitally compressing a program composed of video and sound and broadcasting the digitally compressed program, periodic transmission period and nontransmission period are set for each program, a program corresponding to the transmission period is packed into the transmission period and transmitted, and a time for starting a periodic transmission cycle and the values of a transmission period length and a nontransmission period length are multiplexed and transmitted as information for reception to a receiving side. The minimum unit of the transmission period of each program is unified, and the information for reception is transmitted in the vicinity of the center of the minimum unit transmission period. In a reception system for digital broadcasting, a frequency band different from a frequency band to which a program that the user is viewing belongs is selected and reception information of the selected frequency band is obtained while the program that the user is viewing is during a nontransmission period.
