PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for reading a radiation image in which the balance between picture quality and efficiency can suitably be adjusted, and to provide a program which realizes the radiation image read method, and a recording medium where the program is stored. SOLUTION: A control part 130 of the radiation image reader 100 decides whether a cassette 1 after photography is used for general photography or manmography (step S11) according to size data of the cassette 1 after photography detected by a cassette detection sensor 120, sets the rotating speed of a polygon mirror 144 according to the decision result, and reads image data out of a radiation image conversion plate 11 of the cassette 1 after photography at a laser scanning speed realized at the rotating speed of the polygon mirror 144 (step S12).
