PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the operability of an image reader by making it possible to easily change read conditions and postprocessing. SOLUTION: When a user changes a way of setting a document according to the kind of the document, a CPU detects the way of setting the document (S3 to S7) and automatically controls read conditions of the document and/or image processing after a read according to the detection result (S8). Consequently, the user only changes the way of setting the document and then the read conditions of the document and the image processing after the read can automatically be changed according to the kind of the document.
