PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbonic substance and a negative electrode material using it having an excellent charge-discharge efficiency, a low irreversible capacity, a high energy density, a good cyclic operating performance, and a high safety. SOLUTION: The carbonic substance for use in the negative electrode material of a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery is furnished with pores at its surface, wherein the capacity a of pores having diameters over 0.40 nm is 0.0001-0.300 ml/g, and when the capacity of pores having diameters between 0.33-0.40 nm is represented by b, the ratio b/a is 1 or more.
