PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the total size and weight of a device by minimizing the thickness and weight of an optical system, to make an exit pupil diameter, a display field angle, and an eye relief large, and to reduce aberrations. SOLUTION: The device is equipped with a transmission type diffraction optical element 50 which diffracts light emitted by an image display element 20 and a reflection type optical element 70 which reflects the diffracted light from the transmission type diffraction optical element and has positive power. The transmission type diffraction optical element 50 diffracts the light reflected by the reflection type optical element 70 with diffraction efficiency lower than the diffraction efficiency to the light emitted by the image display element 20 when the reflected light is made incident on the transmission type diffraction optical element 50 again.
